Benjie brings his eclectic background to the UP design table, creating original logos for Upper Playground and showcasing his style. About the Artist:
Benjie Escobar is an LA-based, multi-media artist and designer. His work and his aesthetic sensibilities come from a variety of influences that range from his childhood in Pomona, anime, lowrider bike culture, graffiti, raves, streetwear, DJ culture, Japan, typography, design & illustration and perhaps most importantly, hamburgers or was it pizza?

In addition to his creative work, Benjie is also a curator of art exhibitions, inventor of new zine genres, art-director of gourmet burger festivals and brand builder of countless companies and gives priceless off-the-cuff marketing tips to anyone who cares to listen, or just happens to be within earshot.

“1994 was a golden year. It was the year I moved to San Francisco to skateboard and attend The SF Art Institute. It was also a golden year for Hip Hop. Nas’s “Illmatic”, Gang Starr’s “Hard To Earn”, Notorious B.I.G. “Ready To Die”, Beastie Boys “Ill Communication”, Method Man “Tical”, Jeru The Damaja’s “The Sun Rises In the East”, Scarface, Digable Planets, Saafir, Casual, and many other amazing albums. Renown Japanese artist and muralist, Usugrow, completes a new wall in the heart of the Medina at Rahba Kedima spice square of Marrakech, Morocco. Curated by Valerie Liais du Rocher of Studio IWA with support from Upper Playground, the mural covers the facade of the well known Cafe Des Epices featuring Usugrow’s signature hand style.  Combining his knowledge of Kanji (Japanese), Arabic and English Calligraphy, Usugrow once again reinvents his free hand.
