Curiot (Favio Martinez) completed a new mural at Hotel Des Arts in San Francisco’s Financial District. The Mexico City based artist is in San Francisco for his solo show “Down the Rabbit Hole with Neon Lights” at FFDG. The wall was curated by Upper Playground and Fifty24SF Gallery, and features Curiot’s signature style that alludes to Mexican tradition, with vibrant colors, a mythical beast and geometric designs.

 Fifty24MX Gallery will present a collective art show opening March 14th 2015, as part of MANIFESTOMX, the street art initiative curated by the gallery that addresses the social and political situation in Mexico. The show will feature works from artists Saner, Swoon, Ericailcane, Bastardilla, Ciler, Vena2, Curiot, and Retna. Retna will produce original artwork, and as well as an intervention in Mexico City. Mexican American artist Favio Martínez, a.k.a. Curiot, is based in Mexico city and has become one of the most recognized street artists of his generation. His unique style with references to traditional Mexican folk art, is defined by fantastical figures of pre-Hispanic characters that come alive in colorful fusions of bodies and unlikely creatures. These figures called “curiotis” arise from his inspirations found in ancient cultures and reflections over our consumption and pollution of the environment. Curiot’s work has been shown in galleries such as La Crema, La Mano Gráfica, Baseveintiuno, David Alfaro Siqueiros, MACAZ Museum, Museo Arte Moderno, MUJAM , Centro Cultural Border, Thinkspace Gallery of L.A. and the FFDG of San Francisco. He has taken on multiple mural projects in Mexico, USA and Europe along with other renown artists from around the globe.

“The creation of Nirak´tuh is the most recent exhibit of artist Favio Martínez “Curiot” (Michoacan, México) presenting a series inspired in the element of fire as a component of the duality of Creation – Destruction. In this new series, Curiot creates a collection of characters lead by Nirak’tuh, the sun god, who announces a new cycle in the history of the planet. The bodies of these deities are conformed by intricate structures that unveil pyramids, animals, sea flora, stone effigies, embroidery, lava, cactuses, sacred geometry and several ornamental elements that complement each other with knitt and other material compositions. This is how the creation of Nirak´tuh presents a group of archetypical creatures that reveal in their nature infinite universes that can be discovered layer by layer through the eyes of the spectator.” – Fifty24MX

Famed Mexican illustrator and muralist SANER just released two beautiful designs exclusively for Upper Playground (See Saner’s UP collection here). We asked him a few questions about his illustrations and its inspirations:

 Q1: Tell me about the titles of the 2 art works and why you named them that way.

The first (Kiwi Spirit)  is inspired by the trip we took to New Zealand earlier this year as I tried to find the relationship between the our two countries. Like creating a bridge that united these cultures and create a whole new culture inspired by icons representing each location.

The second (The Storm) is inspired by the battles we fight every day, to always know that we must be firm in our decisions and assume the consequences that these decisions bring into our lives.

Q2: Do you have an all time favorite tshirt?

Not yet, I have my favorite stages of life. For instance as a child I loved a San Francisco 49ers shirt and the Raiders logo has always captivated me. Now I enjoy making designs on shirts and imagine that some people have the same emotion I feel when I wear the shirt.

Q3: If you were a color which color would you be and why?

I think subconsciously the color red comes up because it has been one of the tones that has marked all my work and that is a fundamental part of my palette. It reminds me of the  passion and commitment that I must have every day.
